New Kensington-Arnold School District plans to spend more than a half-million dollars to replace the track and football field surfaces at Valley High School.

Work on the football field’s artificial surface will be done after this fall’s season, school board President Bob Pallone said. It could be done immediately after the end of the season or, if weather doesn’t cooperate, in the spring.

The school board approved paying Sprinturf nearly $320,000. The South Carolina-based company had submitted the lowest of three quotes through a state purchasing program.

The district also received three quotes for the track replacement, but chose the second-lowest bidder, New Jersey-based ATT Sports.

ATT Sports’ quote totaled about $205,000, slightly higher than the nearly $200,000 quote from Track Surfaces Co. (S&S Flooring).

Pallone said Track Surfaces proposed using a “cheaper surface” that the district does not want, and the district preferred ATT’s warranty option. He could not specify the differences in the warranties.

The track will need to be replaced before track season starts in the spring, Pallone said.

“There’s been a repair done to it that was kind of a Band-Aid,” he said.
