Like their neighbors in Cheswick, Springdale Township officials are happy with the early weeks of the merger of their police departments.

On July 1, Cheswick and Springdale Township consolidated police services into the Allegheny Valley Regional Police Department.

A steering committee made up of representatives from both municipalities manages the department.

“It appears to be working out,” commissioners Chairman Tony Rozzano said. “We just have to work out the bugs.”

One item that needs ironed out is hiring police and security for special events, such as a recent concert at Williams Street Park.

The township had to hire a security officer since the steering committee controls the scheduling. A constable was present at Thursday’s commissioners meeting. In the past, a township police officer was stationed at the meeting.

Solicitor Craig Alexander told residents that the steering committee will have to figure out some policies “since we no longer have a police department.”

Security officers and constables will be paid $30 per hour until an agreement is worked out for off-duty officers.

“They’re working out some issues,” Commissioner Henrietta James said. “I’ve been to a couple of (steering committee) meetings and they’ve been great.”

James is not a committee member.
