Mary Bach of Murrysville was recognized recently for her work in consumer advocacy, by a group of Westinghouse retirees dedicated to community service.

Bach, who is also the chairwoman of the AARP’s Pennsylvania Consumer Issues Task Force, received the Westinghouse SURE 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the company’s Service Uniting Retired Employees (SURE) group.

Initiated in 1989 as part of President George H.W. Bush’s “1,000 Points of Light” program, SURE’s mission is to mobilize the expertise of Westinghouse retirees in Southwestern Pennsylvania through volunteer service to the community.

Since they began keeping a record, SURE volunteers have logged more than 1 million hours of volunteer service in the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Bach was recognized for her ongoing efforts to make consumers aware of the latest scams and to ensure that vendors are not overcharging customers for merchandise.

Bach is the first Westinghouse spouse to receive the award. Bach’s husband Leonard is a former Westinghouse employee.

The award was presented during SURE’s annual meeting and luncheon in Penn Hills.
