Fire damages Irwin home undergoing renovations
An Irwin house was extensively damaged by fire Thursday afternoon.
Multiple firefighters departments responded to the fire at the two-story house at the corner of Sixth and Warden streets. The fire was reported at 1:15 p.m.
The owner was not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported, said Irwin police Chief Dan Wensel.
Neighbors said the owner was in the process of remodeling the house, which is attached to a four-bay block garage that opens onto Sixth Street.
Neighbor Cory Lackey said he had been helping the owner, Dave Flannery, remodel the house.
His sister, Courtney Lackey, alerted him to the fire and went outside.
“I saw five-foot flames coming out the roof,” Lackey said.
Another neighbor, Michelle Williams, said she looked out a window and saw flames shooting out of a window next to the roof.
Irwin firefighters were assisted by units from North Irwin, North Huntingdon and Penn Township.
