School board members voted Monday night to purchase a property adjacent to the Hempfield Area High School and administration building.

During Monday night’s public meeting, members unanimously voted to purchase the property for $45,000. Online records show the parcel, off of Route 136, is currently owned by Toya Eubank, and is connected to another district owned property.

Superintendent Tammy Wolicki said, in the short term, the purchase will allow officials to build a new road leading into the high school to help with traffic congestion and to give an additional access point in case of an emergency. Right now, the high school currently has two access points — off Route 136 and along Spartan Lane.

Officials also hope to use the space to widen a road that curves down past the high school and lets out near the administration building.

In the future, Wolicki said the property could provide additional parking.

“We do have an aging building so, at some point, we’re going to have to give some attention to the high school,” she said. “At that point we could move student parking to that area.”
