Irwin officials making plans for splash park
Area youngsters could have a place to frolic and beat the summer heat: a splash park at Irwin Park.
Council on Wednesday authorized the park and recreation committee to research and develop plans for a splash park at the municipal park off of Pennsylvania Avenue.
An estimated cost of the project has not been determined, said Michael Yunn, chairman of four-member committee.
To develop specifications for a splash park, Yunn said they would have to know the required water pressure and the volume of water needed to operate it. The cost of water usage also would be taken into consideration.
Some splash parks are designed to recycle water, said Lucien Bove, borough engineer. But those splash parks are much more expensive than ones that do not recycle the water, Bove said.
A potential site for the splash park would be close to the amphitheater and the creek that runs along the park, Yunn said.
The splash park was first discussed at a town hall meeting in November. Neither Irwin nor North Huntingdon has a municipal swimming pool. Pittsburgh has eight spray parks in various neighborhoods.
