A Latrobe man posted $500 bond last week after he was arrested on animal cruelty charges in connection with 17 dead animals found inside his former Derry Township mobile home.

Andrew T. Pevarnik, 44, had been evicted from the home in April. The animals — 11 guinea pigs, five rats and a mouse — weren’t found until June 20.

Humane police officers reported in court papers that the home smelled strongly of mildew, urine and feces on June 21 after being given permission to go inside. They found the dead animals in cages and aquariums without food or water, according to court papers.

The animals were taken for necropsies to determine a cause of death. Pevarnik is charged with several counts each of aggravated cruelty to animals, neglect and animal cruelty.

He was arraigned Thursday. A phone number for him could not be located. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 25.
