Letter to the editor: Dems not putting US citizens first

Affordable Care Act subsidies seem to be the main sticking point between the political parties and causing the government shutdown, with Democrats claiming no subsidies are going to illegal immigrants. I think this is only true by the Democrats’ definition of illegal.

During the Biden administration, and the last years of the Obama administration, there was an explosion in the use of the immigrant parole program. By a wave of the executive hand, illegal immigrants were made lawful and border patrol agents were transformed from federal law enforcement to concierge agents. The use of government police power at our borders and our very sovereignty was not only nonexistent, it was turned upside down. The government streamlined the process of importing immigrants further by chartering flights into the country from foreign soil and promoting a smartphone app.

I suspect most Americans would continue to view these immigrants as we always have, illegal. They were and they are. For those who are being impacted by the government shutdown, the question should be, why are Democrats putting the interests of foreign nationals before American citizens?

Imagine if our government worked for us for a change.
