Letter to the editor: Harrison should give chief respect
After learning about the controversy surrounding the retirement of Harrison Police Chief Mike Klein, I attended the Jan. 28 township commissioners meeting (“Harrison moving toward retirement plan for police Chief Klein,” Jan. 29, TribLIVE). Clearly, the controversy is not only manufactured, but completely disrespectful.
The votes to accept the retirement plan for Klein remain two “for” (William Heasley and William Poston), two “against” (Robin Bergstsrom and Charles Dizard), and one conspicuously absent (Gary Lilly) — and for the past eight months, nothing changed. Dizard and Bergstrom claimed they need more time to review the information, while Heasley repeatedly dialed Lilly — who assured them he would be available by telephone (he was not).
All the while, sitting in the front row — Klein listened as Manager Rich Hill told the commissioners and audience that the proposal saved Harrison money. No-brainer, right? Not even close.
Klein has served as chief for more than 25 of his 36 years with the department. Our chief is well respected by members of law enforcement and the courts. His dedication created a department that protects and serves with dignity and integrity.
It is time for the Harrison commissioners to end this ridiculous display and give the chief the respect he deserves and a retirement befitting his service
