Regarding the article “Hempfield supervisors spend $222K on vehicles after debate” (Feb. 27, TribLive): I applaud Chairman Douglas Weimer and Supervisors William Bretz and Jay Anderson for voting to invest in the local economy.
Purchasing new vehicles is an investment in the improvement of township services, not simply replacing equipment. The infrastructure that keeps the community running — from road maintenance to public safety — relies on reliable vehicles. By ensuring the township has the necessary tools, they are ultimately increasing the quality of life for every resident.
Additionally, we must acknowledge the multiplier effect of these purchases within the local economy. When vehicles are purchased by the township, they come from local dealerships and businesses. Not only does this directly benefit those businesses, but it creates jobs and keeps money in our local economy. In an era when so many local businesses are struggling, such investments can make a big difference.
I believe that all five township leaders should especially prioritize support for local businesses. Through smart investments like these, the supervisors are throwing their all into building a strong local economy. Hempfield residents must support these initiatives because they are primarily for their own benefit.
The supervisors’ decision to buy new vehicles is a step in the direction of keeping their community strong, effective and economically robust. Residents should continue to support leadership that is focused on the well-being of the township and its businesses.
