Letter to the editor: No kings in America

Our country got its start by rebelling against a king. It was based on a Constitution complete with a Bill of Rights. Our government included a system of checks and balances with three different branches to ensure that no one person (or aristocracy) could have absolute power and control over us.

Now it seems we are doing away with all of that. Powerful billionaires are once again calling all the shots with little or no regard for us or our Constitution.

Do you think (unelected co-president) Elon Musk has your best interests at heart? Is there anyone who can investigate him, or do we just trust him? Is it OK for government favors like contracts, tariff exemptions, powerful positions and state secrets to go to the highest bidders? Or that “gifts” to the administration should be legal? Does it make sense to pay for a Congress that merely goes along with whatever the president and his big donors want?

This isn’t what campaign promises assured us. And it won’t make America great. Our greatness came from a Constitution written by founders who knew what they didn’t want. It came from millions of working people who built the greatest nation in the history of the world.

This is our country. No kings in America!
