Letter to the editor: Questionable church values

I am wondering why protesters would storm the Cities Church in St. Paul, Minn. I’m sure most of us would agree that a place of worship is not the time or place to hold a protest.

There is a statement on this church’s website that says: “We are a community of Christians committed to worshiping Jesus, loving one another, and seeking the good of the Twin Cities.”

One of its pastors, David Easterwood, leads the ICE field office in St. Paul. Now I’m not sure what kind of sermons he presents to his parishioners, but the actions of his ICE agents do not represent any kind of Christian values I’m familiar with. What happened to “loving one another”? I certainly question this church’s judgment in putting a person in a position of ministry who feels it’s OK to yank a 2-year-old out of a car or grab a 5-year-old coming home from day care, along with many others, displacing them to other cities and countries without any kind of due process. Not to mention the callous behavior Easterwood’s ICE agents have displayed in Minnesota, resulting in injuries and even deaths.

What kind of so-called house of God would put someone like that in a pastoral position? Also, what about forgiveness? I have yet to hear anything about Cities Church forgiving the protesters. They seem to be more interested in seeing them prosecuted. Sounds very hypocritical.

I call on all Christians and church leaders to do some soul searching and ask yourselves, “What would Jesus say about all of this?”
