Letter to the editor: Sloan Campus work to impact drivers

Murrysville Council on Aug. 21 voted 5-2 to approve the hauling away of excess and unusable dirt from the Franklin Regional Sloan Campus site (“Murrysville Council approves excavation plan for ‘poor soil’ on Sloan construction site,” Aug. 22, TribLIVE). This vote was in response to the July 29 surprise request from Advanced Builders, Franklin Regional site contractor, to remove up to 12,000 cubic yards of excess, unusable soil from the Sloan Campus building site.

Until receiving this notice, all previous communication from Franklin Regional School District or its contractors had predicted only on-site soil movement. Documented soil test reports from 2018 specifically identified massive amounts of unuseable soil throughout the Sloan Campus site, and planned removal and replacement with up to 8000 cubic yards of new base materials. None of this soil hauling had been divulged to Murrysville Council during the last year, throughout the municipality’s project review process.

For the Sloan School area neighbors and nearby commuters, expect daily daytime travel impacts of trucks on Crowfoot and Sardis roads and Route 22 through much of 2019-20.
