The recent announcement that Spirit Airlines will end year-round flights from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport to Orlando has caused concern in our community. Orlando has long been the airport’s most popular nonstop destination, and its loss, combined with Spirit’s financial restructuring, creates uncertainty about Palmer’s commercial future.
Even with these challenges, the airport remains vital to Westmoreland County. While 2025 passenger numbers dipped, the airport continues to support travelers, private aviation and flight training every day.
And you simply can’t measure the success of the airport solely by the number of “yellow planes” entering and exiting daily. The $22 million terminal expansion underway positions the airport for growth, enabling discussions with new carriers and additional routes (“Official says deal for new airline within reach at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport,” March 10, TribLive). Supporting Palmer is about more than flights today — it’s about sustaining a transportation hub that drives economic growth, tourism and population retention for decades.
Yes, competition from Pittsburgh International and the broader airline industry presents challenges. Yes, attracting new service in a market with fewer carriers is difficult. But our county’s commitment, combined with the upgraded terminal and ongoing strategic planning, positions the airport to remain a cornerstone of regional transportation.
Palmer Airport is more than flights — it is a driver of jobs, business and economic opportunity. By standing together as a community, we can ensure the airport not only survives today’s challenges but thrives, serving Westmoreland County well into the future.
