Letter to the editor: The real Pentagon waste not being addressed

The Pentagon is not able to pass an audit of its expenses. It cannot account for around one-half of its budgeted $850 billion. There is waste and abuse in failed weapons programs, unnecessary nuclear expansion and exorbitant prices for goods and services by defense contractors. The failure of DOGE to address these problems is a shameful disregard of billions of dollars of taxpayer money.

To illustrate the size of the problem, look at the seconds instead of dollars. A million seconds is equal to 11.5 days, a billion seconds is equal to 31.5 years. Now times those years by the billions of unaccounted for funds and you can see the scope of the waste in the Pentagon.

To date, DOGE and Elon Musk have only cut $80 million, earmarked for diversity initiatives and academic research, from the Pentagon budget. There is no demand for financial accountability of missing funds or evaluation of the last century’s warfare weapons to which we continue funneling billions. But there are severe cuts to this century’s national security threats. Our 21st-century defense priorities are cybersecurity, climate security and A-1 based warfare. Each of these have been decimated by the current administration.

One must ask, is this administration trying to cut bloat, waste and fraud or is it trying to destroy our country?
