Letter to the editor: This Land is MAGA Land
MAGA Land:
This once was your land
But now it’s MAGA land
From Panama’s canal
To the Greenland island
From Canadian forests
To a strip called Gaza
Your land, it now belongs to me.
This song, thankfully, has yet to be written. But it’s easy to imagine that MAGA songwriters will mock Woody Guthrie’s American folk song with their own gloating version if President Trump has his way. Expect the MAGA writers’ lyrics to laud the forced relocation of millions of Palestinians from their homes. Perhaps a verse on the benefits of ethnic cleansing. I can’t wait to hear their rhyme for Riviera.
It will be no surprise to hear the MAGA chorus belt out a verse about renaming the waterway the PanaMAGA Canal. Nor should we be shocked to hear lyrics referring to what is now Greenland as Muskland.
Maybe by Trump’s executive order, Canada’s national anthem, “Oh Canada,” will be banned, having been replaced by the new MAGA Land Song. Gentlemen, please remove your hats and sing along.
We’re witnessing a 21st-century assault on nation states and other countries’ boundaries that is nothing less than American imperialism at its worst and colonialism at its low-bar best. Trump is choosing to ignore international law and alienate our allies in the process.
Oh, how we miss you, Woody Guthrie.
