The hits — and more than two dozen runs — just kept on comin’ for the Pitt baseball team Wednesday afternoon.

The Panthers (16-28, 4-17 ACC) rapped out 21 hits — including a grand slam by David Yanni — in an historic 26-2 victory that completed a two-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore at Charles L. Cost Field.

The offensive outburst represented the most runs by a Pitt team since the Panthers scored 36 against IUP in 1953. A total of 13 batters collected at least one hit.

“Our guys have continued to bring out the energy, they’ve put in the work, and they are starting to reap the rewards of what they’ve put in,” coach Mike Bell said. “Today was about our offensive approach. We continued to get the big hits with two outs, but up and down the lineup we saw a lot of balls hit hard. “We saw guys running hard, 90 feet, playing the game the way it is meant to be played. “Again, defense was very solid, but (Wednesday) was all about the offense. It was going to be an offensive day the way the wind was blowing and our guys did a great job in putting together quality at-bats.”

The Panthers return to ACC play Friday for the start of a three-game series against Florida State. Bell is a former Florida State assistant.
