The buzzword for this year’s elections is affordability. The word choice is directly connected to pocketbooks. I suggest those seeking office shouldn’t forget another important word: accountability. These two can be easily linked. Those who made the decisions leading to affordability or remained silent at the time should be held accountable.
Those involved in, or who failed to condemn, past actions shouldn’t be forgotten. One example is the January 2020 insurrection. While some who were directly involved served brief prison terms (and were later pardoned), those who instigated the attack escaped accountability. The investigation was halted with minimal punishment to few.
The same can be said for stealing government classified documents, later discovered at Mar-a-Lago in Donald Trump’s bathroom and ballroom, magically, without human help. No one has been held accountable for the theft.
Whether those named in the Epstein files as trafficking girls and young women are ever held accountable remains to be seen. Interestingly, the identification of those named individuals has morphed from their birth names to REDACTED. More magic. More accountability.
The American system of justice, where offenders are expected to be held accountable for their actions, is badly flawed at best. Too often the rich and powerful escape accountability. This is morally and financially unaffordable.
