Letter to the editor: Bring back some form of the draft

Is it time for the draft? Not the meaningless NFL Draft where the quid pro quo has already been determined. The city and county will have a financial windfall, probably only to give it up to Steelers owner Art Rooney for facilities improvements. We’ve seen this movie.

I’m referring to the military draft. Before your head explodes, read on. There’s no question the divisiveness in our country is out of control. Our young people need to understand that freedom isn’t free. It never was, it never will be.

The brainwashing that goes on, primarily on college campuses, needs to be counterbalanced by a year of learning what it means to pledge your allegiance. I’m not suggesting they be forced into combat duty, but basic training, and be educated in geography and history. Clearly, the mental and physical acuity is lacking.

Was my father, a World War II vet, on to something 50 years ago? He strongly suggested a tour in the Army would do my backside a world of good. Ever the smart aleck, I would reply, “Are they getting short on generals?” Needless to say, an explosion followed. It should be noted my oldest brother had been killed in Vietnam five years earlier.

Once again, freedom isn’t free.

When you’re young, you know it all, or so you think. As a lifelong independent, I have tired of the neverending bellyaching about President Trump.

If you don’t like this country, perhaps you should be deported. It’s my understanding there is some beachfront property available … in the Strait of Hormuz.
