Letter to the editor: Don’t squander Skenes, shale resources

Despite top-tier starting pitching, the Pirates are not competitive — and their leadership is questioned daily by fans and Trib writers. But at least the Pirates’ shortcomings are obvious.

What’s less obvious — but far more important — is that Pennsylvania isn’t nearly as competitive as it should be when it comes to attracting business, despite having world-class energy resources. Yes, the Marcellus shale has delivered tremendous environmental and economic benefits. And yes, AI and data center developers are ready to invest in the commonwealth.

But just like drafting Paul Skenes doesn’t guarantee wins (as the Pirates’ losing record in his starts this season reminds us), having great resources doesn’t guarantee success. Winning takes conscious effort, smart investment and leadership that actually wants to win.

That said, it’s easy to look longingly at other baseball teams with owners clearly trying to compete. It’s just as easy to look at states like Ohio, where lawmakers recently passed a bipartisan, pro-growth energy bill that is clearly built to win.

If that frustrates you as much as the Pirates’ historically bad offense does, then contact your elected officials in Harrisburg and ask: Why is Ohio acting like it wants to win — and what’s stopping Pennsylvania?
