In disbelief, I watched the video of the ICE agent shooting Renee Good on Jan. 7. This despair only deepened as I listened to President Trump and high-level members of his administration blatantly and deliberately lie to us. How could they state facts that were demonstrably false? They were gaslighting us. They tried to convince us that we had lyin’ eyes and that only their perceived reality was true. But it was too late. We had seen the video, and we knew the truth.

As I see it, Good was the victim, and the ICE agents were the terrorists. All too often, we have witnessed their aggressive, violent and unlawful tactics. ICE is known for its cruel, inhumane and racist behavior, excessive use of force, violations of people’s rights, and unlawful arrests and detentions.

ICE’s behavior mirrors that of its commander in chief. Donald Trump is known for his dishonesty, cruelty and lawlessness. Here is where the blame lies.

I believe that when Good was surrounded by masked, heavily armed, unnamed agents threatening her, she panicked, fight-or-flight kicked in and she tried to escape the danger. For that, she paid with her life. This is not how law enforcement is supposed to operate.
