Last week, Pittsburghers gathered downtown for a We Stand with Ukraine demonstration, making clear that our city refuses to abandon Ukraine in its fight for survival. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance mock President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, block critical military aid and treat Vladimir Putin’s war as a political game.

My father and his six brothers, all from Chicora, just north of Pittsburgh, served in World War II. They understood that dictators don’t stop on their own. They knew that standing up to aggression isn’t optional, it’s a responsibility. Yet it seems Trump and his allies would rather appease a war criminal than defend democracy.

Every delay in support emboldens Putin, weakens NATO and signals to dictators everywhere that the U.S. won’t stand by its allies. Congress must act now to send Ukraine the aid it needs. Voters must remember in November who stood for freedom and who stood in its way.
