Letter to the editor: We're approaching dictatorship

Tribune-Review

Constitutionally, there should exist an equal balance of power between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. That doesn’t seem to be the case today.

Aside from his “Big Beautiful Bill,” President Trump has ruled by executive order, ignoring Congress, whose job it is to make the laws. In 4½ years in office he has issued a whopping 345 executive orders. By comparison, President Biden issued 160 over four years and President Obama 277 over eight years.

He rebuffs and quite simply seems to not want to deal with Congress if he can avoid it. Furthermore, since both the House and Senate are controlled by the Republicans, they rubber-stamp just about everything he wants for fear of losing reelection.

Traditionally and historically, the nine members of the Supreme Court have emphasized impartiality when deciding cases regardless of party affiliation. Today, they too rubber-stamp his wishes, probably out of fear.

His criticism and harassment of federal judges is unparalleled in our history. He essentially controls both the legislative and judicial branches.

Lastly, his intimidation, blackmailing and extortion of the media (i.e., CBS, Stephen Colbert), big legal firms, renowned universities and huge corporations exemplifies his ugly control of everything in our lives through threats and the use of fear.

Who is left to stand up to him? Nobody! If all of this is not a dictatorship, I don’t know what is.
