A 21-year-old man died on Tuesday morning when his SUV swerved into oncoming traffic along Route 66 in Washington Township and crashed head-on into a pickup truck, according to authorities.

The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday night identified the driver of the SUV as Michael C. Signore, of Delmont.

Witnesses told police that a Chevy Equinox was traveling southbound shortly after 10 a.m. when for “an unknown reason” it swerved into the path of a Dodge Ram 3500 pickup that was going north, Washington Township police said in a news release.

The wreck happened in the 3200 block of Route 66 near Pfeffer Road. The road was closed between Kistler and Mamont drives until about noon, according to officials.

The Westmoreland County Coronor’s Office was dispatched the scene, where Signore was pronounced dead.

According to the coroner’s report on Tuesday night, Signore was not wearing a seat-belt. The SUV’s air bags did deploy after the crash. Toxicology results are pending. The death has been termed accidental.

Initial reports from witnesses was that one of the drivers was trapped in a vehicle that flipped over and caught fire, but first responders noted that there were no flames when they arrived, police said.

The 62-year-old man who was driving the pickup truck was conscious and alert and was transported to the hospital by ambulance for unspecified, non-life-threatening injuries. His name was not released.

Two medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene but were canceled, the supervisor said.

The crash is under investigation, police said.
